When I originally planned to go to Mamallapunam, it sounded like a cute fun town. Ash assured me there was little to do: “You can spend an afternoon there and you would have seen it all.” So we did. We took a day trip from Chennai.
After stopping for lunch at a neat cafe on the beach, Holla, we hopped in Ash’s car. We got there around 2 and it was miserably hot. Touts chased us, trying to sell us things; we ignored them.
First we visited the Five Rathas. Pretty beautiful intricate stone carvings. I climbed on the elephant, and we took photos around.
Then we went to a park, where we walked around for a while, taking photos of various stone sculptures. We climbed to the top of a structure, and then to the top of a lighthouse. We saw Arjuna’s penance, a wall carved with beautiful tales. We went to the Shore Temple, with its beautiful views.
Throughout it all, we were hot. It made for an exhausting afternoon. We ended up at the Radisson Resort, where we walked around on the nice beach in front (My toes touched the Indian Ocean for the first time!), got juices, and had a pretty awesome buffet dinner.
Even though it was just a day, not five like I planned, still a very interesting city, if a bit too hot.
